Having an LMS is a great investment, but once you get it running, it can be hard to evaluate how it’s performing. Much like in racing, making a pit stop to ensure your LMS is in tip-top shape is essential. Every couple of laps, a race car makes a stop, and we recommend once a year doing a stop for an LMS check-in. Here are the things you need to be looking at in your check-in:
- Total Cost of Implementation vs. Budget:
Was the project over budget? What caused the overage and what can be done to minimize spend going forward? - User Access:
How many learners have accessed the system thus far? If they’re less than expected, you may need to communicate more to learners or evaluate the content. It could be that your learners just don’t know or remember the LMS, or the content isn’t resonating. - Course Completions:
How many courses have been completed? If your numbers are low, be aware that too many courses at once can overwhelm learners. Releasing a few at a time can help make courses feel manageable and increase completions. Otherwise, you may need to evaluate how engaging or relevant the courses are. - Learner Feedback:
What is the level of feedback you’re getting from your learners? It’s important to check in and listen to learners as they are the ones who need to get the most out of the system. They’re like the drivers in the driver’s seat, and if the system isn’t running well, they will likely be the first to know. If the feedback is less than stellar, you might need to see what needs to be addressed. - Impact on Business Goals:
Has the system delivered an increase in revenue, productivity, or reduced overall costs? In most cases, when the answer is no, it’s a problem with the first three checks we made at the pit stop. First, always try to correct these, but in rare cases, if the LMS fails all these checkpoint items again and again, it might be time to consider switching your LMS. However, before you go down the path of switching an LMS, ensure that the failure is caused by the LMS itself and not related to content or organizational issues.
