Just-in-time training is one of the most important new training methods that you should be utilizing, but what is it and how can you use it to improve your own training? Just-in-time training is when you learn while actively doing your job instead of separating the two. So, while you will be doing a task and going through the process, you will also be learning about it. The advantages of just-in-time training are that it is timely, as it happens with the task, and is more efficient. It’s relevant as it’s easier for learners to see how to apply what they are learning, and it’s efficient as there is less time for disconnect between the training and the application.
A great real-world example of this is in medical or healthcare when it comes to medical device training. With low-stakes medical devices, it’s possible for doctors to learn how to use them while they are with a patient. Another great example is in manufacturing or auto manufacturing, where, when working on different parts of the car, you get your training as you build each part of the car. There are lots more examples of how you can implement just-in-time training across a plethora of different industries and roles.
The steps to implementing just-in-time training are: First, define your objective—what do you want to get out of your training. Second, identify key learning moments in work—find those points in the process where training is the most integral. Third, develop relevant content—with those key moments you identify, create learning materials around them. Fourth, leverage technology—there are lots of great ways for you to deliver your content; don’t be afraid of technology, mobile is an especially easy way to deliver just-in-time training. Fifth, integrate with workflows and finally, encourage an e-learning culture. If you aren’t promoting the importance of e-learning, you won’t actually be able to see the results.
Here are some tips: Keep it concise—the less information, the more likely it is to be retained. Make sure it’s actually relevant, prioritize accessibility, use various content formats—this is especially important for retention. Keep up to date and, of course, analyze and improve. Look for weaknesses and how to correct them—nothing is ever perfect the first time. Metrics you should pay attention to for evaluating success include course completion rates, time spent on each module, number of accesses, assessment scores, feedback surveys, and learning path progression.
